Health is one of life’s greatest blessings. When you live healthy, everything is better–work, play, creativity, relationships, intimacy, accomplishments, ability to laugh, and enjoyment from it all. Gratefulness and wonder are part of daily living along with appreciating nature and being of service to others.
You may be thinking its healthy when you have a thorough check-up (looking at cholesterol levels, blood profile, liver function, digestive ability, blood sugar levels, heart function, etc.). The numbers come back within the “normal range.” From that result, you say, “I guess I’m healthy.” But, wait a minute. You may still not feel at your peak. Something’s off but you’ve no clue what or why. If it’s not called “all in your head,” you are given a time frame to come back and see if anything has changed. It reminds me of this quip by a talk show host:
“Dick Cheney said he was running again. He said his health was fine. ‘I’ve got a doctor with me 24 hours a day.’ Yeah, that’s always the sign of a man in good health, isn’t it?
– David Letterman
Healthy encompasses balance on four levels. What does healthy look like in each one? Certainly not ailing, weariness, lack of focus, pain, and fear. No way! Here are the levels and an overview of healthy on each one:
Healthy PHYSICAL BODY:
A healthy body is much more than numbers. There should be powerful core strength with reserves of energy whenever you need to go above and beyond in physical activity. A strong, functioning immune system when you can say, “I can’t remember the last time I was sick; haven’t had the cold or flu for decades.” The skin glows, eyes are clear, and bright smile adorns the face. There’s sharp recall, and you sleep like a baby at night. You’re neither overweight nor underweight. All body systems work in harmony. You usually look and feel much younger than your chronological age. If you are in your golden years, you can keep up with your grandkids. Sure, you may occasionally experience an off day, but you know what to do to stoke the fire.
It’s more than positive or negative outlook. A healthy mindset is plugged into accountability and responsibility. The mindset realizes health is a day to day proposition, and strives to both establish and maintain habits that are health-promoting. It strives to bring excellence to waking hours of accomplishment. “The way you do anything is the way you do everything” would be a fair mantra. At the center of the mindset is reverence for The Power Within, and gratefulness for the amazing way we are designed.
Healthy emotions are based upon the wisdom in cultivating self-control, calmness and peace. You are able to prioritize what truly deserves fight or flight so as not to sweat the small stuff. Understanding the hypothalamus linking to the pituitary to the endocrine system regulating immune/inflammatory reactions, you control your anger, rage, hatred, anxiety, fear, depression, feeling hurt, contention and other immune-lowering emotions.
The incorporeal healthy spirit evidences itself through one’s character–strength, fortitude, will, courage, boldness, faith, love, joy, mildness, compassion, kindness, and long-suffering. It taps into higher purpose in the bigger picture than the here and now. It can include one’s vision and how one shows up in the world. It is healthy when the spirit is in alignment with the Creator of the universe.
The question is, can one be truly healthy? Absolutely! Learn how to function on these four levels with optimum awareness and support. It’s certainly much more than numbers. It is the effort you put forth each day to continue building and maintaining. Healthy is as Healthy does! Check out this valuable free training on how to arrive at “Healthy!”
