If getting healthy seems like climbing an unscalable mountain to you, learn to live healthily.
You must live healthily to build and maintain health. Perhaps you are thinking, “But health is not my job. I just leave that to the professionals.” You are in charge of your body 24/7. The choices you make and habits you form have tremendous positive or negative impact. Positive personal attention with concerted effort and skill makes all the difference. Live healthily–it’s the best way to achieve and maintain health.
To become more skilled at living healthily, understand and appreciate the human body at a deeper level. Here are (4) basics that I consider to be at the top of the list:
1. DESIGN – Envision trillions of living cells comprising organ systems all working in harmony. Besides giving our bodies structure, cells assimilate nutrients from food, convert nutrients into energy, and get rid of wastes. Cells contain the body’s genetic code, allowing replication and renewal. They obviously require protection or problems will arise.
That is a massive amount of simultaneous cellular activity without our direct supervision. Studying the design brings a newfound respect and desire to honor it with skilled care. (Can you think of ways that you might be negatively impacting your cells?)
2. HOMEOSTASIS – This term refers to the body’s ability to seek and maintain balance internally. Have you considered how the adrenal glands help maintain balance in stress? What happens in the liver when toxins are present or when all that acidic soda and junk food impacts your blood’s pH? Why would calcium be pulled from bones into the bloodstream? How does the body respond when glucose concentration decreases? Why is a healthy body temperature 98.6 degrees? These may not seem like things you’d care to know, but knowing the answers can make a world of difference in choices you make. Homeostasis is always working to maintain stability without your giving it any thought. (Do you see the need to connect more with the inner workings to provide better support?)
3. HEALING POWER – If you’ve ever gotten a cut, you may have noticed the various changes taking place in the process of healing. It is quite extraordinary. The World Journal of Surgery presents that there are six stages that the body goes through in the healing process. For all that activity, it should be obvious there is a marvelous design and built-in capacity to heal. (If you checked out the six stages, do you have a deeper appreciation for what’s going on under a bandage?)
4. LEVELS OF FUNCTIONING – Care must be given to all four levels in which we function. More than just meeting the obvious physical needs, there are mental, emotional and spiritual needs. Proper nourishment is required on all four levels. A healthy body can contribute to healthy thoughts, emotions, and spirit. (Will you do an honest appraisal and determine to give attention to where you need it?)
Health professionals should help you to understand your body’s processes and teach you what is required for health. That was the idea since the word doctor is derived from the Latin word docere meaning to teach or instruct. The bulk of responsibility and accountability, however, is on your shoulders to apply that knowledge. Nourish and nurture yourself! When you nourish you flourish; when you don’t, you won’t.
The psalmist said, “I praise you because in an awe-inspiring way I am wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. I know this very well.” Ponder the marvelous way we are designed. When you do so, your appreciation will deepen for that innate intelligence within and your desire to intelligently support it. Living healthily is not an unscalable mountain as the picture and its caption proposed. Live in a way to see your best health emerge!
